Hard Core Coffee Ranked from Most to Least
Tuesday, August 28, 2018For some, coffee is about functionality, about results, about the caffeine! Most of us know if we prefer a mocha over a latte but may not know which hard core coffee packs more caffeine. For that matter, many of us believe there is more caffeine in a shot of espresso than in a cup of drip coffee. However, when you get down to numbers, the amount of caffeine is greater in a drip cup of coffee. One 2 oz double espresso shot has about 80 milligrams of caffeine. Whereas a 12 oz brewed coffee has about 120 milligrams. So, there is more caffeine in an average cup of drip coffee than in espresso.
HARD CORE COFFEE RANKINGS: MOST TO LEAST
Want more? Let’s break down all the hard core coffee drinks from most to least. Of course, this list assumes you aren’t getting extra shots.
CLASSIC HOT COFFEE
As we said earlier, ounce per ounce, you get more caffeine in a regular cup of joe. When you want to grow hair on your chest, this classic tops the hard core coffee list.
DOUBLE ESPRESSO SHOTS
These are quick to make, quick to drink. Wham, bam, and you have infused yourself with caffeine as quickly as possible. For some, it is an acquired taste—but it gets the job done.
AMERICANO
Hot water with espresso shots. It is just a diluted version of straight espresso shots. It helps with the flavor though.
CAPPUCCINO
This is espresso diluted with steamed milk and then diluted again with foamed milk, giving it the same color as the robe of a Capuchin Monk—hence the name cappuccino.
LATTE
Although technically this has the same amount of espresso as a cappuccino, it has twice the milk, placing it further down the hard core coffee list.
MOCHA
This also has the same amount of espresso as the cappuccino and latte, but with the addition of steamed milk and a shot of chocolate syrup. Wait—doesn’t chocolate have caffeine? Shouldn’t this be higher on the hard core coffee list? Yes and no. Yes, chocolate has caffeine, but the amount is minimal, and it is the darker chocolates that have the caffeine, so no it belongs right where we put it — after cappuccinos and lattes.
EYEBALLING THE WILD CARDS
A red eye is an extra shot of espresso with a cup of coffee. You can upgrade to a black eye, which is two shots of espresso per cup of coffee. Then the third option is called the dead eye, which is three shots of espresso added to a cup of coffee. The dead eye is the most hard core coffee drink you can get if you are judging by caffeine quantity. We can’t guarantee hair on your chest, but you will definitely perk up faster with a dead eye than any other espresso beverage.
