How The Pacific Northwest Became A Leader In The Coffee Industry
Thursday, March 15, 2018Coffee is ubiquitous in the Northwest, it scents our early morning commutes, it inspires our daring outdoor escapades and it employs our (arguably) most fashionable and trendy citizens. But how did coffee become so omnipresent in our heavily forested little corner of the nation?
How The Pacific Northwest Became A Leader In The Coffee Industry
Well, one could argue that Seattle’s coffee culture simply filtered (pun intended) down to the Portland metro area after Starbucks skyrocketed to global success. The Seattle culture that once focused on small-batch roasting, sustainable farming, and fair-trade practices had quickly become a commodity, leaving Portland to take up the mantle of the nation’s official coffee geeks.
And take up the mantle we did. With local brands like Stumptown, Water Avenue, and Portland Roasters filling the void left by the commercialization of our northern neighbor’s coffee roasters. Today, Portland’s coffee culture attracts visitors from all over the world, eager to taste what the nation has largely agreed to be the best coffee in the country. And a resurgence of small-batch local roasters has only increased our cache as coffee trendsetters, cementing our reputation as true coffee connoisseurs.
