For most of us, fall is when is when we trade in our iced coffee for warmer fare. This is usually triggered by the return of the Pumpkin Spiced Latte. Some hold on, waiting until the weather forces them to don sweaters, scarves, and gloves, but a growing number of coffee lovers now self-identify as year-round-iced-coffee-drinkers (YRICD for short). It’s a thing. There are even websites that try to deconstruct The Cult of Year-Round Iced Coffee Drinkers.
THE EFFICIENCY OF CAFFEINE INTAKE
The article suggests that YRICDs are all about efficiency. It not about the taste, it’s the ability to drink all that caffeine as soon as your hand is on that cup. This may be true, research from an Allegra report says that 58% drink coffee just for the functionality. There are only two other reasons why folks drink coffee; indulgence and socializing. These two reasons are a distant second and third as to why folks drink coffee.
ALL THE NEW KIDS ARE DOING IT
Cold brew is not the same as iced coffee, which is just regular coffee poured over ice, naturally. Both apply to the new trend of drinking cold coffee all year round. Cold brew sales are up by 40%, another trend attributed to the millennials, with 66 percent of American millennials drinking the cold stuff, compared to 34 percent of generation X.
BUT IS IT REALLY HEALTHIER?
Iced coffee has many of the same benefits as regular coffee. Cold brew might have more benefits. We can get into the molecules, oils, and solubles—or we can just break it down. Cold brew coffee has about a third less acid than regular brewed coffee. This has an impact on your insides. Why? Because the body functions best when in a relatively alkaline state.
