Is Coffee Good for a Hangover?
Tuesday, January 1, 2019
Your head hurts, you feel woozy, you’re in desperate need for water and food, and you’re too scared to check your phone. It must be New Year’s Day.
If you woke up this morning feeling totally hung over and regretting all life decisions, you’re probably not alone. We’ve all been there. Between the free-flowing bubbly, the lack of food and the thought of ringing in another year with Ryan Seacrest, you’re bound to drink a little too much. But don’t be too hasty about reaching for that cup of joe. Coffee may not be the best idea for a hangover cure.
Myths About Coffee and Hangovers
Though it may seem like the best cure for bringing you out of that less than pleasant haze you woke up to this morning, coffee is not necessarily going to sober you up any quicker. The only way to get rid of a hangover is to let it take its course and leave your system, slowly and naturally. The rate at which that occurs is the same no matter how big or small a person. And whether it’s a fine pinot noir or upside-down margaritas, the type of alcohol doesn’t affect the rate at which that happens either. It’s all about the liver and how quickly it can process the alcohol.
What if You Can’t Just Sleep the Day Away?
The best thing to do for a hangover is to go back to sleep. If you’re one of those responsible types and find that you can’t just sleep the morning away, you can supplement your caffeine fix with plenty of water. Here are some ways to ease yourself out of a haze for a busy New Year’s Day:
- Drink a full glass of water as soon as you wake up.
- Start with a little coffee, such as a half a cup.
- Drink another full glass of water.
- Wait a half hour to a full hour before having another cup of coffee.
- Feeling better? Then go ahead and have another half-cup of coffee.
- Remember to keep drinking lots (and lots) of water all day.
